This work well for me; but the second time I wanted to transfer the isilo files, I already forgotten how to do it. So, this will be a reminder for me for the next time. Regret, the print screen pictures were not copied along.

How to transfer isilo files from computer to iSilo™ for iPhone OS on Windows XP

Introduction

These instructions show you how to transfer a document file to your iPhone/iPod touch so that you can view the document with iSilo™ for iPhone OS.

The iPhone and iPod touch devices do not have built-in general file transfer capabilities, so each third-party application that requires access to external files is solely responsible for implementing its own file transfer mechanism. The initial release of iSilo™ for iPhone OS, version 1.0, provided the ability to transfer document files to your device by downloading them from a web server.

Version 1.2 implemented a file server within iSilo™ that allows you to connect via Wi-Fi to iSilo™ on your device from a desktop computer to transfer files directly. This article describes how to transfer files with this method using Windows XP.

These instructions assume the following:

• You have iSilo™ installed on your iPhone or iPod touch device.
• You have a Wi-Fi network through which your iPhone or iPod touch device is connected.
• You have a Windows XP computer to which you want to connect your iPhone or iPod touch device for transferring files.
• Both your Windows XP computer and your iPhone/iPod touch device are on the same network. Your computer can be connected via a wired Ethernet cable as long as it is on the same network as the one serving the Wi-Fi connected devices.

Note that the images shown here may differ from your particular setup depending on the version of iSilo™ you have installed and the version of Windows XP on your system, but the instructions are pretty much the same. The screenshots in this article were taken on a system running Windows XP Home.

In the instructions that follow, the word computer will be used to refer to your Windows XP computer and the word device will be used to refer to your iPhone or iPod touch device.

1. In order to be able to transfer files to your device, you need to start the iSilo™ file server on your device. In iSilo™’s document list view, tap the More button on the right part of the navigation bar.

2. In the File section, tap Server.

3. You should now see the File Server View screen. The Status should show that the file server is ON and the Server Address section should show at least two lines, each line being a possible address that you can use to access the iSilo™ file server. The first line will be the Bonjour address and the second line will be the numeric IP address.

Bonjour is a networking protocol that provides the ability to refer to devices using a name instead of a numeric address. If you have iTunes or Safari installed on your computer, then you will have the Bonjour service available and you can use the Bonjour address to refer to your device. Otherwise, you can just use the numeric IP address.

4. With the iSilo™ file server on your device on, you can now connect your computer to your device. On your computer, go to the Start menu and click My Computer.

5. In the My Computer window, click My Network Places.

6. In the My Network Places window, click Add a network place.

7. You should now see the Add Network Place Wizard. Click Next.

8. Select Choose another network location, then click Next.

9. In the Internet or network address field, enter the IP address shown in the Server Address section of the File Server View screen on your device. Make sure to type the full address, including the “http://” prefix and the “:8080” suffix. Click Next.

10. When asked for the name you want to give the network place, you can just leave the default or enter an actual name. Click Next.

11. Make sure your device is still on and in the File Server View of iSilo™. Then click Finish to complete the wizard and start the connection.

12. Assuming a successful connection, you then get a file explorer view of the top of iSilo™’s Documents directory.

13. If you go back to the My Network Places screen, you will see that there is now an icon for the connection to your device.

Assuming the IP address of your device does not change, then in the future, you do not need to go through the wizard again to connect your device. You can just access your device directly using the already mapped drive. However, note that iSilo™’s file server must be active in order for your computer to be able to connect to it.

14. We can now open two file explorer windows, one with the files we want to copy and the other with the view of iSilo™’s Documents directory on the drive we just mapped. To copy files, just drag and drop.

In the screenshot here, we dragged two files from the Documents directory on our computer to the top of the Documents directory on the device.

15. We can see the copy progress here.

16. If we go back to our device and exit out of the File Server View back to the document list view, we can see the two files we just copied over from our computer.

• iSilo™’s file server must be active on your device in order for your computer to be able to connect to it to transfer files. With the initial default settings, the file server is only active while in the File Server View. Options are available on that screen for making the server active at other times while you are in iSilo™ by selecting a different setting for the When option.
• If you have Bonjour installed on your computer and the Bonjour address works for accessing your device, then you do not need to worry about the IP address of your device changing, as the Bonjour system handles that scenario transparently. Bonjour is automatically installed if you have either iTunes or Safari installed. There is also a standalone installer for Bonjour available from Apple that installs only the Bonjour networking component. You can use that installer if you want to utilize Bonjour on a computer without having to install either iTunes or Safari.
• As also mentioned in the above steps, you do not need to go through the Add Network Place Wizard each time you want to transfer files as long as the IP address of your device has not changed. You can just go directly to the server by accessing it using its icon in the My Network Places window.
